Dual PhD Degree
Dual PhD Degree Positions in Reservoir Simulation, Uncertainty Management and Decision Making
Dual PhD degree positions are available at UNICAMP in collaboration with Durham University
Application deadline: March 31st, 2017
Further application periods are planned
Applicants are invited to apply for dual PhD degree positions conducted between the State University of Campinas, Brazil (UNICAMP) and Durham University, UK (Durham), in collaboration with BG E&P Brazil, a subsidiary of Shell, to study reservoir simulation, uncertainty management and decision making. The positions will be hosted the first year in UNICAMP, then spend a maximum of two consecutive years in Durham and the last year in UNICAMP (total of 4 years). The second year at Durham is dependent on CNPq approval.
The positions will be based in the UNISIM Reservoir Simulation and Management group of Professor Denis Schiozer at UNICAMP and in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Statistics and Probability group of Professor Michael Goldstein and Dr. Ian Vernon at Durham.
The primary focus areas throughout the PhD will be to investigate and develop Bayesian history matching and forecasting strategies for oil reservoirs, with the aim of optimizing reservoir management and decision making in the face of multiple uncertainties. This topic is both highly relevant and highly regarded by the petroleum industry.
Benefits of the program to the selected candidates
- Dual PhD degree study in the integrated field of reservoir simulation and Bayesian statistics under Professors Schiozer, Goldstein and Dr. Vernon;
- CNPq (Science without Borders) scholarship in Durham with all associated benefits (dependent on CNPq approval);
- Coverage of full university fees at Durham;
- Provision of additional funds for research related costs;
- Industry contact and access to industry data sets.
Approved candidates requirements
- Positions only available to Brazilian nationals or foreigners with permanent Visas in Brazil;
- MSc dissertation in an Engineering, Geosciences and Statistical disciplines, preferably Petroleum Engineering, including reservoir simulation or statistical approaches;
- Proficiency in English (IELTS certificates or equivalent required) - Language of study will be English;
- Candidates will need to apply for the appropriate visa to study in the UK.
Deadline
The application deadline is 31st March 2017. PhD position will begin in UNICAMP in August 2017, with study in Durham commencing one year after starting at UNICAMP.
